What is Faith?

The UnPerfected Life Podcast – Episode Recap & Devotional Thoughts

Faith. It’s a word we hear a lot in church, in songs, and even in everyday conversations. But what does it really mean? Is it just about believing in something you can’t see? Or is it something deeper, something that shapes how we live every single day?

In this week’s episode of The UnPerfected Life Podcast, we explore the question: “What is faith?” and why it’s essential for walking with God in every season of life.

What Faith Really Means

Hebrews 11:1 tells us: “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.”

Faith isn’t wishful thinking. It’s not crossing our fingers and hoping things work out. Faith is confident trust. It’s believing that God is who He says He is and that He will do what He promises, even when we can’t yet see the outcome.

Think of faith like roots beneath the surface of a tree. You can’t see them, but they anchor the tree, hold it steady through storms, and draw life-giving nutrients from the soil. Our faith in God works the same way, quietly, invisibly, but powerfully sustaining us in ways we may never fully realize.

Why Faith Matters

Faith isn’t just for “super-Christians.” It’s for all of us, in our ordinary, messy lives.

Faith allows us to:

  • Stand firm when life feels stormy or uncertain.
  • Trust God when we don’t have all the answers.
  • See His fingerprints in places where others might just see coincidence.
  • Take steps forward, even when we can’t see the full path ahead.

The truth is, faith grows as we use it. It’s not about having perfect faith. It’s about choosing to trust God step by step, day by day, even when it’s hard or confusing.

Biblical Examples of Faith

In this episode, we explored examples from Scripture to show how faith works in real life:

  • Abraham trusted God’s promises even when it seemed impossible (Genesis 12–22).
  • David had faith to face Goliath, trusting God’s strength over his own (1 Samuel 17).
  • Peter stepped out of the boat and walked on water because he trusted Jesus, even when he couldn’t see the full picture (Matthew 14:22–33).

Each of these stories reminds us that faith is not about perfection. Instead, it’s about trusting God, even when the outcome is uncertain.

Bible Verses About Faith

Here are some powerful verses to help you grow and strengthen your faith:

  • Hebrews 11:6“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”
  • 2 Corinthians 5:7“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”
  • Romans 10:17“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”
  • Matthew 17:20“Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
  • James 1:6“But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.”

These verses remind us that faith is active, confident, and anchored in God’s truth, not just our feelings or circumstances.

Final Thought

Faith isn’t about having it all figured out. It’s about trusting the One who does. Whether your faith feels big and strong or small and shaky, God sees it. He meets us right where we are, and He uses even our smallest acts of trust to grow something mighty.

You don’t need perfect faith. You just need a God who is perfect. Start where you are, and let Him do the rest.

Remember, God’s Strength is made perfect in your weakness, so boast in it.
