Trusting God with Your Dreams

The UnPerfected Life Podcast – Episode Recap & Devotional Thoughts

I’ll be honest—spontaneity is not my strong suit. I have lists for my lists. My calendar is planned months in We live in a culture that tells us to chase every dream, never stop hustling, and measure our worth by what we achieve. But what happens when our ambitions collide with God’s timing—or His plans?

That’s where surrender comes in.

This week on The UnPerfected Life Podcast, we talked about what it means to fully trust God with our dreams—big and small—while still having the courage to step out in faith.

Here’s the hard truth I’ve had to learn:
Not every dream is God’s assignment. And not every ambition will be fulfilled the way I picture it.

Some dreams take years.
Some change.
Some get completely redirected.

And that’s not failure—it’s faith in action.

Joseph: Surrender in the Waiting

Joseph’s God-given dream was clear, but he wasn’t ready for it yet. His journey took him from favored son to slave to prisoner… before God finally brought the dream to life. Through it all, Joseph learned to trust God’s process, timing, and purpose—even when the dream looked dead.

Lesson: Sometimes surrender means staying faithful in the dark, trusting God to bring the dream about in His perfect way.

Nehemiah: Surrender in the Calling

Nehemiah’s “dream” didn’t start with excitement—it started with heartbreak. His burden for Jerusalem’s broken walls drove him to prayer before action. And when God opened the door, Nehemiah walked through it, brick by brick, staying focused despite opposition.

Lesson: God-given dreams often start with a burden. Surrender means letting Him shape the calling and open the right doors.

4 Keys to Surrendering Your Dream Without Quitting

  1. Start with Surrender
Proverbs 3:5–6 reminds us to submit all our ways to Him—including our dreams.
  2. Seek Confirmation
James 1:17 tells us every good and perfect gift comes from God. Test your dream against His Word and godly counsel.
  3. Keep God’s Voice Louder than the Dream
Matthew 6:33 says to seek Him first. Don’t let the dream become an idol.
  4. Hold Your Dreams with Open Hands
Ephesians 3:20 promises God can do more than we imagine—so let Him reshape the dream if He chooses.

This Week’s Challenge: Prayer Journal Your Dream

Write down:

  • What you’re dreaming of
  • Why it matters to you
  • How you can surrender it to God this week

Then ask: “God, is this dream from You—or something I’m holding onto for myself?”

When we trust God with our ambitions, we get something better than a fulfilled dream—we get a faithful God walking with us every step of the way.

Because in the end, it’s not about building something for ourselves—it’s about bringing glory to Him.
